Trent Alexander-Arnold Hints at Penalty Reluctance in England’s Shootout Win

Trent Alexander-Arnold suggested that one of his England teammates didn’t want to take a penalty in their tense shootout victory against Switzerland.

The Liverpool defender who scored the decisive penalty, was overheard discussing the incident with his brothers after the game.

On Which Player did Trent comment on Taking the Penalty?

During the penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw with Switzerland, England scored all five of their spot-kicks. Alexander-Arnold, who came off the bench towards the end of extra time, converted the final penalty to secure a 5-3 victory.

After the match, he was filmed talking to his brothers in the stands, where he seemingly mentioned that a teammate was reluctant to take a penalty.

“He didn’t want to take one,” Alexander-Arnold was heard saying, though it was unclear who he was referring to or if that player ended up taking a penalty.

England in Euro 2024 Semifinal

England’s perfect penalty performance marked their first time scoring five out of five in a shootout at a European Championship or World Cup. This victory also ended a long drought since their last Euros shootout win in 1996 against Spain.

The players who successfully converted their penalties were Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, and Alexander-Arnold.

Jordan Pickford saved Switzerland’s first attempt from Manuel Akanji, and players like Declan Rice, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Eberechi Eze, Luke Shaw, and Pickford himself did not take penalties.

Phil Foden, who was substituted for Alexander-Arnold in the closing minutes of extra time, was also not among the takers.

What Next for Trent and England?

Despite facing criticism throughout the tournament, England has advanced to the semi-finals of Euro 2024. This achievement marks the third major semi-final under Gareth Southgate’s leadership in four tournaments.

England will face the Netherlands next, with a spot in the final on the line. The semi-final clash is all set for Wednesday.
