Despite criticism over his defensive performance at Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been kept by England boss Gareth Southgate for this month’s Nations League matches.

Only one from Liverpool for the national team this September

Liverpool’s season has gotten off to a shaky start. There is a long list of injuries this season. Players have come under criticism. Trent has recently become one of the prominent names on that list.

For the next matches against Italy and Germany, Southgate has selected a 28-man team, with a notable absence of Liverpool stars.

This time, Anfield is represented by just one person. Alexander-Arnold is the only name from the Red half of the Merseyside who is representing the national team.

What Trent brings for the England national team

Alexander-Arnold is a tremendous option when attacking set pieces because of both his crossing and shooting. The scouser is composed and focused. He can make a short pass to link up with a central midfielder, but his long passing is so precise that he can play a deadly ball all the way from the right flank to the left winger.

The Liverpool boss has always praised Trent for his efficiency during the match. Klopp was there for Trent the last time he missed the Euros.

Gareth Southgate to give Trent the benefit of the doubt this time

Many of the Reds have been a subject of criticism this season. While Trent struggles to maintain a regular role for his nation despite being one of the top right-backs in the world, Southgate has continued to believe in the player for the month of September.

Trent has received appreciation for his performance in the past from Gareth Southgate. On their 10-0 victory in November, the England manager had some choice words for the Liverpool right back.

“For him to have an enjoyable England night is important. He showed some fabulous quality with a couple of assists.

I’m really pleased for him that he will go back home feeling a big part of what has happened.”

On September 23, England plays their opening Nations League match away in Italy before visiting Germany three days later. The Three Lions are now last in their group after losing all four of their first group games.
