Liverpool planning January move for Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio

Liverpool are interested in signing Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio during the upcoming January transfer window.

According to Diario AS, Asensio may move to Liverpool in January. The 26-year-old has been shut out of Madrid this season due to his contract situation. In total, he has only played 17 minutes of football across all competitions for the Los Blancos.

Arsenal and AC Milan are apparently in the mix in addition to Liverpool, to sign the young forward. The Spain international’s contract expires next summer, making him potentially transferable for a less amount. Asensio has made 238 appearances for Real Madrid and has scored 50 goals and 24 assists. This season, he has made 3 appearances and scored 1 goal.

Asensio has refused to sign a new deal at the Bernabeu which could see Madrid look to cash in on the 26-year-old, having placed a £23.5million price tag on his shoulders, with the club desperate not to lose him on a free transfer next summer. The Spain international wants more game time than he has been getting ahead of the World Cup, but Ancelotti has been unable to give him any guarantees due to the form of Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde alongside Karim Benzema in the attack.

The Reds Eye Marco Asensio this January

During this summer transfer window, Liverpool was a potential destination for Asensio. Despite the forward appearing to be available, nothing actually happened. Liverpool had also personally spoken to the player about a transfer.

Asensio is quite adaptable, he might fill Mohamed Salah’s spot thanks to his lethal left foot. Salah is currently finding it difficult to hit the ground running this season. A backup for him in January might make him fight for his place in the squad.

Arsenal firmed up their interest in Real Madrid star Marco Asensio after Carlo Ancelotti revealed the Spaniard wishes to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

The way the season has gone up until that point will probably determine whether Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp conduct any business in January. But they won’t play much between now and then because of the upcoming World Cup and potential Premier League postponements.

The Reds could use some mid-season additions based on their performance thus far this season. Asensio might not be the best choice, but he might not be that bad either.
