Transfer Analysis: Liverpool summer transfer window 2024 – Are the Reds ready for the season?
Learn about how the 2024 summer transfer window panned out for Liverpool and what are the positives and negatives.
The English summer transfer window for the 2024-25 season concluded this Friday. All Premier League clubs have fine-tuned their squads with necessary signings and some big spending.
However, the Merseysiders are the only club who have commenced the new season with the least amount of signings.
The club has spent £41.5m this summer which saw them become the lowest-spending PL club this transfer window.
Liverpool summer transfer window 2024: A detailed overview
Player | Nationality | Former Club | Fee |
---|---|---|---|
Giorgi Mamardashvili | Georgia | Valencia | £29m |
Federico Chiesa | Italy | Juventus | £11m |
The Anfield giants were in the market this summer to revamp the squad for the new head coach Arne Slot’s debut season.
The complaint for the last few transfer windows has been that the Reds are lacking a proper defensive midfielder and a left-footed centre-back.
So the higher officials at the club targeted Spanish star Martin Zubimendi to solve the former problem.
However, despite their relentless efforts to sign the midfielder, the EURO 2024 star decided to stay at Real Sociedad, crushing the hopes and dreams of the club and the fans.
Fans and pundits have often called the FSG’s market approach ‘opportunistic’ as they never really tried to pounce upon their desired targets. Instead, they have resorted to finding players who are available for cheap and keeping in mind the future business prospects.
Although Slot needed the signings in the aforementioned positions, the club signed Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili on £29m deal and will be staying there on loan until 2025.
They also completed the signing of long time target Federico Chiesa from Juventus in a surprising fee of £12.5m.
In terms of transfer outs, the PL giants sold young talents Fabio Carvalho and Sepp van den Berg to Brentford for £27.5m and £25m respectively.
The club also sold promising youngster Bobby Clark to RB Salzburg for £10m who reunited with former Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders at the Austrian side.
Billy Koumetio joined Dundee United, Harvey Blair joined Portsmouth and Anderson Arroyo joined Burgos for undisclosed fees.
LFC let Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, Adrian, Mateusz Musialowski, Niall Osborne, Cody Pennington, Matteo Ritaccio, Melkamu Frauendorf, Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Zac Jagielka and Adam Lewis leave for free.
Several young players have joined other clubs on loan such as Stefan Bajcetic, Luca Stephenson, Rhys Williams, Ben Doak, Marcelo Pitaluga, Calvin Ramsay, Nat Phillips, Luke Chambers, Lewis Koumas and Kaide Gordon.

Positives and Negatives
After all the departures, Arne Slot is now left with a 23-men squad. Let’s look at how this might work out in the 2024-25 season.
The Reds’ attacking line is stacked with six attackers, Salah, Jota, Diaz, Gakpo, Nunez and Chiesa.
Six midfielders will be at the disposal for Slot which can become a cause of worry for the new Dutch head coach.
At defence, there are eight options for the Merseysiders which can also become a problem in the near future.
Slot will have three goalie options in the form of Alisson, Kelleher and Jaros.
This season, the Anfield side will be competing in the UCL in which they will have to play more matches than before with the new competition format.
Going deeper into the season, the smaller squad size might conjure up as a big issue due to injuries and unavailability.
Nonetheless, we will hope that Liverpool doesn’t face those issues and exceed the success of the previous season.
