Liverpool made a grand re-entry into the Champions League with a dazzling performance at the San Siro on Tuesday night and Thierry Henry couldn’t stop praising one Liverpool star post win.
The Reds, back in Europe’s elite competition after a season in the second tier (Europa League), delivered a statement win over AC Milan, showcasing their quality and determination.
Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Liverpool was anticipated to be the end of an era, but his final season saw the team return to where they truly belong.
Despite a shaky start to the season, including a defeat to Nottingham Forest for Arne Slot’s team, Liverpool looked unstoppable against the Italian giants.
Gakpo channels Thierry Henry in Milan masterclass
AC Milan’s Christian Pulisic had given his team an early lead with a stunning finish from a tight angle. However, Liverpool quickly turned the game around. Centre-backs Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk capitalized on Milan’s set-piece errors, and soon Liverpool was in control.
Cody Gakpo, making his first start under Klopp, played a crucial role in Liverpool’s victory. His assist for Dominik Szoboszlai was a thing of beauty, earning high praise from all corners. Jamie Carragher even noted that Gakpo’s assist had a touch of Thierry Henry’s style.
Henry himself agreed with Carragher’s assessment. Speaking to CBS Sports, Henry praised Gakpo’s skillful run and strategic pause that made it “virtually impossible” for Milan to stop him. “That’s very good. He kind of stopped his run, so he paused the player and, at the same time, he went back in. Virtually impossible and then Szoboszlai finished it,” Henry commented.
Gakpo’s form has seen a significant turnaround. After struggling to make an impact under Klopp, his outstanding performances at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands have rejuvenated his career. Playing primarily on the left, Gakpo showed his potential and could be a key player for Liverpool going forward.
With competition from Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, Gakpo’s role remains vital but uncertain. Yet, his recent performances suggest that Liverpool’s Dutch star could be the answer to their attacking needs, proving that he’s more than just a flash in the pan.
