Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard hoped Jurgen Klopp would stay at Liverpool for years to come, in an interview given a few years back.
‘Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool this summer and the club appointed Arne Slot, who has had a good start to his Liverpool life. It is not an easy task to replace Klopp, although fans are now happy with Arne Slot. But he has a lot to prove.
Steven Gerrard made feelings clear on Jurgen Klopp
In 2021 while Gerrard was manager of Rangers, he was asked: “There are a lot of Liverpool fans watching your success…”
Steven Gerrard cut of the question and said: “The Liverpool fans don’t want me to be the manager of Liverpool Football Club. They want Jurgen Klopp to continue to be the Liverpool manager – and I’m totally with all of them.”
“We shouldn’t talk about this, we have one of the best managers leading our club at the minute, I love him. I hope he stays for a few more years. But I’ve got a job here. I don’t think it’s helpful to talk about this and I hope Jurgen stays at Liverpool for many years.” said Steven Gerrard on him replacing Jurgen Klopp.
Steven Gerrard made the switch to Aston Villa later that year, while he was still impressing with Rangers.
But he was let go a year after taking charge due to poor results. Gerrard then took the Al-Ettifaq job in Saudi Pro League the following year. Gerrard is now onto his second year as Al-Ettifaq manager, and has gotten off to a good start.
