Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio during the summer transfer window.
The club is said to be looking to refresh their midfield department, and the Serbian international is valued at €50 million (£44 million) by Lazio, according to CMW.
The Reds drastically need reinforcements in that position with injury-prone Naby Keita, and Arthur Melo leaving this summer. Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson and James Milner are on the wrong side of 30.
It is crucial for Jurgen Klopp to revitalize the team’s midfield position, and the January transfer window will be of great significance.
Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Arsenal and Juventus are also said to be interested in Milinkovic-Savic.
Milinkovic-Savic has scored 62 goals and contributed 57 assists in 305 appearances for Lazio since arriving at the Italian side from Genk in August 2015.
The 28-year-old has four goals and seven assists in 12 games this season, and his teammate Ciro Immobile even compared him to a Man City star midfielder.
After a 4-0 win over Fiorentina, Immobile said:
“Trust me, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is magic. He’s on the same level of Kevin De Bruyne.”
He is a dynamic midfielder with extensive European experience who could make an immediate impact at Liverpool, making him a potentially brilliant signing.
There are reports of a swap deal involving defender Joe Gomez being offered to Lazio to lower the Serbian’s transfer fee.
Joe Gomez has had difficulty securing a consistent spot in the starting lineup since his serious knee injury, even though he signed a new long-term agreement with the Merseyside club during the summer, committing his future to the team.
Lazio president Claudio Lotito told Rai Sport earlier this year when questioned on the Serbian.
“Milinkovic is not for sale. I turned down €140m (£120m) bid for him [years ago]
I’d ask Sergej what he wants to do only in case we receive an important proposal from a world-class top club.”
However, the Serbia international only has two years left to run on his current deal, and he could be able to switch clubs during next summer’s transfer window.
Milinkovic-Savic has been linked with several clubs, including Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, but Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly keen to secure a deal.
