Liverpool would be flying scouts to Portugal this weekend to watch Benfica’s clash with Sporting, to watch Manuel Ugarte in action.
The Reds are said to be in serious contention to sign the Uruguayan wonderkid, Ugarte. They are also reported to be keen on activating his £52m release clause.
However, Liverpool aren’t the only team targeting the holding midfielder. Rival clubs like Newcastle and Spurs are also interested in the 22-year-old’s services.
As per Portuguese outlet CM Jornal, Liverpool would be sending scouts to watch Ugarte in action, over this weekend. However, it is claimed that Newcastle will also have scouts present to watch Ugarte in action. Meanwhile, Spurs are another team, reportedly set to be in Lisbon, although their exact targets are unclear.
The likes of manager Ruben Amorim, Pedro Goncalves, Marcus Edwards, and Goncalo Inacio are all said to be under the microscope from Sporting alone.
Amorim notwithstanding, Liverpool have been linked with each and every one of these over the last year. But for now, at least, their sole purpose is supposedly winning the crowded race for Ugarte.
Liverpool faces competition for Ugarte
There is no denying that Liverpool are clearly targeting the Uruguayan midfielder. They have been linked to him over the past week and his agent has been dropping hints as to the Anfield club showing interest in Ugarte.
Moreover, the Reds have been scouting the Portuguese market and have signed two very promising players already. Darwin Nunez from Benfica and Luis Diaz from Porto have been brilliant for Klopp’s team.
As a result, it would make absolute sense for them to be in Lisbon on Sunday evening. There’ll be a lot of talent out on the pitch, all of it potentially available for the right kind of price.
In Ugarte’s case, that price is quite clear. The 22-year-old has a release clause of around £52m and Sporting intends to recoup that if they sell him.
Moreover, the trusted journalist, Romano has reported that Ugarte will very much be on the market. Also, Romano claimed that three English clubs are chasing the Uruguay international.
It now seems like a matter of time before we see Ugarte donning the Liverpool jersey for the next season.
