Premier League legend and former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright has expressed how sad he feels watching the downturn in the form of Liverpool left-back, Andy Robertson this season.

Tuesday’s trip to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest turned out to be another bad day at the office for the Scotland captain.

Robertson, who performed better defensively against the pacey and tricky Anthony Elanga, had very poor deliveries when tasked with taking set-pieces.

This was further magnified in the fact that Kostas Tsimikas provided the assist for the equalising goal by Diogo Jota from a corner kick in the 66th minute.

The Greek defender set the ball on a plate for Jota to score, with his first touch of the game after being brought in for Andy Robertson.

Ian Wright extends his sympathy to Liverpool left-back

While there has been an obvious decline in Andy Robertson’s performances this term, Ian Wright has admitted that it is hard to watch one of Europe’s most consistent performers in the left-back position over the last few years going through such a tough period.

Wright while speaking to The Overlap on Thursday said “I hate seeing that, because when you love a player, I hate seeing that.” Many fans are of the view that Tsimikas should become Liverpool’s first choice left-back through the remainder of the season.

Although, Robertson is going through a difficult moment, there is no need for the club to overreact and discard such a veteran in the process.

Regardless of the fact that the Reds’ long-time servant might not be at his best currently, it in no way means that the now 30-year-old’s career at the club is over.

Liverpool does need to get back-up for Robertson, the club and manager recognise that they have to strengthen the options for the left-back position in the ongoing transfer window or during the summer.

The Scot’s current contract with the Reds’ does not end until 2026, and he should be retained at the club even if he does not play regularly. This decision however lies in the hands of Arne Slot and the club’s management.

Robertson has been at Liverpool since 2017 when he signed from Hull City and has gone on to lift 8 major titles with the Reds including the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

It is unfortunate to see how things have unfolded for him this season, but he has still played an important role in a team that sits at the top of the Premier League and UEFA Champions League standings.
