The Austrian media has cast doubt on Pep Lijnders’ capacity to successfully guide the team and his managerial career at RB Salzburg has encountered difficulties.
Lijnders has struggled with patchy performances since taking over in May 2024, especially in the Champions League where Salzburg has lost badly 4-0 to Brest and 3-0 to Sparta Prague to name just two of their many setbacks.
Lijnders struggle with RB Salzburg
For the first time in recent memory, the team is currently bottom of their group and hasn’t fared much better domestically finishing outside the top two in the league.
Following a devastating 5-0 loss to defending champions SK Sturm Graz things became too much to handle.
Austrian media outlets have been critical of Lijnders including Salzburg24 and Kronen Zeitung.
Kronen Zeitung said,
“After the promising start to the season, the mood at FC Red Bull Salzburg has now completely changed. Coach Pep Lijnders seemed perplexed after the humiliation against Sturm. But it would be time for him to find answer.
Lijnders seemed perplexed: ‘I have a lot of questions in my head.
Indicative of the situation with the bulls. The questions have the upper hand, there are few or no answers. But it is high time to deliver them.
After the promising start to the season, things like cohesion, enthusiasm and passion are missing. In this regard, it is also important to find out what part Lijnders himself has played in this”
There could be internal conflict as a result of Lijnders’ alleged partiality for Bobby Clark and Stefan Bajcetic two Liverpool loanees.
As Salzburg struggles with defensive instability and lacklustre midfield presence Lijnders has publicly admitted he’s grappling with unanswered questions about his squad’s performance further intensifying scrutiny from the press.
