Mohamed Salah got his first goal of the year at AFCON (African Cup of Nations) as Egypt overcame Guinea-Bissau to get their first win.

Mohamed Salah’s Egypt have had a rocky start to the AFCON. Having lost the first game narrowly to Nigeria, they looked destined for another loss.

For the majority of the night, the game seemed to be going against Mohamed Salah and Egypt.

Even though Egypt dominated the game, Guinea stood their ground, at least for a good part of the game. Egypt had 61% of the ball, took 18 shots (11 on target), and created 15 chances.

Mohamed Salah came very close to getting his first AFCON goal in the second minute when his shot hit the post.

Then 9 minutes after the hour mark, Mohamed Salah finally found his goal. The Liverpool no.11, who has been in the news due to contract issues, volleyed Amr El Soleya’s lofted ball into the goal to get Egypt their first win of the AFCON.

Egypt’s win now gives them a stronger position in the AFCON. Second in Group D, a win or draw against Sudan could get them a spot in the next round.

Salah’s performance, meanwhile, got him the Man of the Match award. This means all three of Liverpool’s representatives have won a Man of the Match award in the AFCON.

Sadio Mane won the award in Senegal’s opening game after scoring a 97th-minute penalty. While Naby Keita’s performances won him the man of the match award in both of Guinea’s matches.

Naby Keita’s performances for Guinea has gotten them a draw and a win, putting them on the top of their group. Sadio Mane has also scored only one goal in the AFCON so far after drawing one and winning one game.

While Liverpool are missing the expertise of these three, seen especially in the 0-0 draw vs Arsenal, it is great to see all three play so well.

Hopefully, we will see one of them lift the trophy by the end.
