Sadio Mane pushed aside persistent rumours about his Liverpool future to lead Senegal to victory and registered himself in the history books by breaking a national record. Senegalese scored a hattrick to take home the victory.

Mane has been progressively sowing the seeds for his probable departure from Anfield in the summer transfer window over the past fortnight.

Despite assertions to the contrary, the 30-year-old had long stated his intention to depart.

Unlike Mohamed Salah, it is believed that there has been no back-and-forth between Liverpool and Mane’s representation. And all indications are that he will leave, with Bayern Munich his likely destination.

Mane ties Senegal record

Mane is in action with Senegal, who are aiming to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before making any decision in the future.

Senegal, the defending champions, faced Benin in their Group L opener on Saturday evening. With Mane the focal point as the No. 10 in a formidable lineup.

Senegal was gifted an early chance when Benin left-back David Kiki was penalized in the box. And the Liverpool forward backed up lone striker Boulaye Dia.

Mane stepped up to drive home the penalty. He then doubled the advantage with a magnificent effort at the second attempt 10 minutes later.

He whirled away, pointing to his Senegal shirt. And went on to complete his hat-trick at the hour mark with a penalty kick.

It was a cathartic – and historic – night for Mane. Keita Balde later came on for Mane in the closing moments.

Mane’s hat-trick gives him 32 goals for Senegal, one ahead of Henri Camara for the most ever scored by a Senegalese player.

This just adds to a remarkable year for his country, in which he also played a key role in winning the Africa Cup of Nations. And also securing a spot in the 2022 World Cup at the expense of Egypt.

If only his talent could stay on Merseyside, but it appears like Liverpool will have to go elsewhere for their next icon on the left flank.
