Liverpool tried to capture the signature of current Arsenal star goalie Neto who is currently on loan at Arsenal.
Liverpool has a well-established reputation for applying a rigorous recruitment process to find the best candidates throughout Europe.
A target of theirs was Brazilian goalkeeper Neto who is currently on loan at Arsenal from Bournemouth.
Neto to Liverpool failed attempt
The club made several attempts to sign Neto over the years praising his style of play and how well it fit their system according to former Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg.
Speaking on the LFC Transfer Room Podcast, Achterberg said:
“I looked at everything every year when there were new goalies coming in the leagues.
I’d try to find them, make lists on that, and then if I found goalkeepers who played the way we wanted to play, I’d come back to that.
Neto was a goalkeeper we tried a few times to get as well, but that didn’t come off.“
Working closely with the scouting team Achterberg disclosed that their persistent efforts to bring Neto to Anfield were unsuccessful in closing the deal.
The highly regarded shot-stopper Neto had been a player for Bournemouth and Barcelona before joining Arsenal to cover David Raya.
It was mainly because he could play the way Liverpool wanted that the 35-year-old was admired by them. But in the end they were unable to pursue them so Neto had to find another place to travel.
Achterbergs admission begs the question of what Liverpool might have achieved if they had been successful in signing Neto.
