The defensive concerns of Liverpool have sparked renewed interest in Nottingham Forest’s standout centre-back, Murillo.

The 22-year-old Brazilian delivered a monumental performance against the Reds during their recent Premier League clash, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s most promising defenders.

Forest battled to a hard-earned 1-1 draw at the City Ground, with Murillo playing a pivotal role. He recorded a staggering 17 clearances – five more than any other player on the pitch – and dominated aerial duels with eight headed clearances.

Such stats reflect his growing strature in England’s top flight, earning him a man-of-the-match rating of 8.2 from FotMob. Since joining Forest from Corinthians in August 2023 for £11 million, Murillo has flourished.

His robust defending, combined with his ability to anticipate threats and carry the ball forward, has drawn comparisons to players like Antonio Rudiger. This season, he’s been integral to Forest’s success, with the club boasting the league’s second-best defensive record.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has recently called for the Reds to “buy a defender,” a sentiment echoed by fans frustrated with inconsistent displays from current options Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate.

Liverpool eye Forest’s defensive phenom Murillo

Murillo’s reliability – 52 league starts since last season – and physical resilience make him an enticing prospect. Interestingly, Murillo has not been shy about his admiration for Liverpool. Speaking last year, he acknowledged last year,

“I wouldn’t discard Liverpool either. It would be a good opportunity for me to show my football in a big club.”

He told Tribuna last year:

“I had the dream of playing in the Premier League and I thought: ‘I’ll go to Nottingham Forest, have a good year and then I’ll go to a big club.’ I had that in my head.

I’d choose Manchester City but it would be more difficult for me to be a regular starter given the players they have in their squad.

There’s City, Arsenal as well, who are fighting for the Premier League title. I wouldn’t discard Liverpool either, it would be a good opportunity for me to show my football in a big club.”

However, signing him won’t be straightforward. Murillo is reportedly negotiating a lucrative contract extension with Forest, which could increase his price tag. His current valuation has already soared to £70 million, a hefty fee for a defender still in his early 20s.

Despite the financial challenge, Murillo’s profile fits Liverpool’s long-term needs. As a potential successor to Virgil van Dijk, the Brazilian offers both Premier League experience and immense potential for growth.

If paired with Van Dijk, Murillo could transform Liverpool’s backline into one of Europe’s most formidable. With clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and even PSG monitoring his progress, Liverpool must act decisively to secure this rising star who could redefine their defensive future.
