But What A Game!
Manchester City vs Liverpool: Player ratings
Goalkeepers & Defenders
Alisson Becker (GK) – 6.5/10
Liverpool No.1 had a busy afternoon in a tense game at Etihad. The Brazilian was secured when required maybe could have gotten a touch on Jesus’ finish but it would have been tough.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB) – 7/10
The home side didn’t give him a free license to run up the pitch. But a lovely Trent’s trademark pass from back to front to set up for Jota for the first goal and registered another assist for the season.
However, struggled defensively against Cancelo and lost Jesus for his goal.
Joel Matip (CB) – 6.5/10
Matip looked nervy in possession at times and took an unfortunate deflection off De Bryune’s strike for a goal. But as the game moved on, he settled and made some crucial interventions later in the game.
Virgil van Dijk (CB) – 7/10
City’s fierce play troubled the big Dutchman and was on the edge on many occasions. But his body positioning was top-notch to hold up Sterling as he looked to run clear on goal.
The Dutchman made a big block from Jesus’ effort when it mattered. Took more extreme heat than he thought.
Andrew Robertson (LB) – 6/10
The Scotsman was energetic and troubled in the left flank with great balls but by his usual standards, it was a quiet afternoon.
The left-back showed anger at Van Dijk and the yellow card showed stress the home team administered.
Fabinho (CDM) – 6/10
The Brazilian struggled in the first half as Kevin De Bryune caused a lot of problems. But brought his composure in the second half which ultimately proved handy for the away side.
But Fabinho was perhaps lucky not to escape a red card for a high challenge.
Jordan Henderson (CM)- 6.5/10
The captain was overwhelmed by the pace and quality of City’s midfield at times. But he was part of the sequence that derived Mané’s finish.
But full marks for his work ethic, always agile to press and make forward movement. Later Hendo was subbed off.
Thiago Alcantara (CM)- 8/10
The Spaniard was clever on a couple of occasions, he looked to get his side ticking and pulled City into conceding free-kicks to break up play.
Thiago made a Wonderful pass in the build-up to Liverpool’s first-half equalizer.
Mohamed Salah (RW) – 6/10
The Egyptian went another game without a goal in open play but influenced the game as it went on. An exquisite ball around the City defenders to set Mane’s goal and bring Liverpool back into the tie.
But should we worry about his goals?
Diogo Jota (ST) – 7/10
The Fox was again at the right place at the right time to score early and level things up for Liverpool. The Portuguese could have had a couple more via Salah’s bright second-half display.
Later, with 20 minutes to play, he was subbed off to bring in Roberto Firmino.
Sadio Mane (LW) – 8/10
Klopp chose to go with the birthday boy over Luis Diaz, and that paid off. Along with the rest of the team, he was also influential in the second half.
The forward made no mistake to make 2-2 after the break with a clinical finish. Later the Senegalese was subbed off.
Luis Diaz – 6/10
The Colombian should have started the game. He showed his class yet again when brought in as he injected pace and was superb in winning the ball back.
Naby Keita (CM) – 6/10
Liverpool No. 8 was tidy and was clean in winning the ball back and made a difference on the pitch.
Roberto Firmino – N/A
