Well, well, well, it looks like Manchester United’s grand plan to bolster their youth ranks has hit a bit of a snag. And the one responsible for this is Liverpool.

In what can only be described as a major slap in the face for United – and a not-so-subtle jab at Chelsea – 16-year-old wonderkid Rio Ngumoha has decided to swap Stamford Bridge for the bright lights of Anfield. Ouch!

Ngumoha, a highly-rated forward who had been busy turning heads in Chelsea’s youth setup, was the subject of a summer tug-of-war between England’s top clubs.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea were desperate to lock down the youngster. According to The Athletic, United even rolled out their grand development vision, probably complete with glossy brochures and a well-rehearsed sales pitch, to lure Ngumoha to Old Trafford. Spoiler: it did not work.

Chelsea, naturally, were not going to let their rising star leave without a fight. They pulled out all the stops to keep Ngumoha. Even John Terry was really disappointed to see the young talent leave.

For Manchester United, this one stings. The Red Devils are trying to rejuvenate their youth squad and had high hopes for Ngumoha as a future star.

Losing him to Liverpool – a club they are already not too fond of – just adds salt to the wound. It is not every day you get to lose out to a rival and Chelsea in one fell swoop. But hey, there is always next summer, right?

As for Chelsea, well, losing a youth player is one thing, but losing him to Liverpool after a tug-of-war? Yeah, that is got to hurt. But do not worry. They have got a billion-pound squad to soften the blow.

Meanwhile, at Liverpool, Ngumoha’s settling in nicely with the U18s. the Reds will be taking their time, nurturing him for the big leagues, while Chelsea and United watch from the sidelines, probably wondering what they could have done differently.
