Liverpool’s legend John Aldridge has urged the Reds to capitalize on Man City’s recent struggles by strengthening their squad in the January transfer window.
With Man City grappling with a historic four-game losing streak under Pep Guardiola and the looming shadow of 115 financial charges, the title aspirations of Liverpool appear brighter than ever.
Jamie Carragher recently highlighted on The Overlap podcast the importance of using January to bring in a transformative player, a sentiment Aldridge supports.

Aldridge noted in part one of his weekly ECHO column that, Liverpool must avoid panic buys. But they should strategically invest, given their solid financial footing and relative inactivity in the summer transfer market where Federico Chiesa was the only notable addition. For example, he recalled how Luis Díaz’s midseason arrival in 2022 galvanized Liverpool to push for a quadruple.
Liverpool eye January moves as Man City struggle
Despite strong start under Arne Slot, Liverpool must face a crucial period ahead. Upcoming clashes with Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Everton could define their season.
Yet, Aldridge insists the immediate focus must remain on Sunday’s game against Southampton. Overlooking the next match would be a criminal offense, if the Reds want to maintain their momentum.
Meanwhile, Curtis Jones’ resurgence has caught Aldridge’s eye. After excelling in England U21 duties with standout performances against Greece and Ireland, Jones appears to be flourishing in Slot’s system.
Aldridge believes Jones could thrive as a No. 10, a role that aligns with his attacking instincts from youth football. Injuries previously hampered Jones’ development. But his recent form indicates that he may play a crucial role in Liverpool line-up. That of course, if he remains consistent and injury-free.

As the season progresses, Liverpool must remain vigilant against complacency. Manchester City’s track record of long winning streaks ensures they can not be written off. Also, past records suggest, Man City’s performance grows better and better as the season nears its end.
Aldridge’s message is very clear: act decisively in January, focus on each game as it comes, and capitalize on Man City’s moment of vulnerability, and the next few weeks will be crucial for Liverpool’s fate in the Premier League this season.
