Manchester City are poised to make a move for RB Leipzig’s rising star, Josko Gvardiol, despite his affinity for Liverpool.
This potential transfer could once again frustrate Liverpool in the summer transfer window, as Pep Guardiola and Manchester City intensify their interest in the Croatian defender.
Gvardiol as Potential Aymeric Laporte Replacement
With Aymeric Laporte’s dissatisfaction and limited playing time this season, City have identified Gvardiol, valued at £90 million, as a suitable replacement and may outbid Liverpool for his services.
Laporte, a key figure in City’s five league titles since his arrival in 2018, appears to be on his way out of the club after falling down the pecking order. As City seeks to fill the void left by Laporte, they are reportedly set to intensify their pursuit of Gvardiol, according to The Telegraph.
The Reds’ Interest in Gvardiol
Liverpool were urged to pursue Gvardiol’s signing by former star Steve McManaman, especially after the defender expressed his fondness for the club. However, Gvardiol is currently under contract with RB Leipzig until 2027, and a £90 million release clause will become active next year, as reported by Sky Germany.
City’s Future Plans: Kovacic, Gvardiol
While Manchester City focus on their upcoming UEFA Champions League final against Inter Milan, they are also planning for the future.
The club is already working on a deal to acquire Chelsea midfielder, Mateo Kovacic. Strengthening the defense is another priority for City, and the potential signing of Gvardiol would address this need ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Laporte’s uncertain future has prompted Manchester City to consider suitable replacements, and they view Gvardiol as an ideal candidate.
The Croatian has been highly regarded by the club for some time, and although his Leipzig contract includes a €114 million release clause until 2027, there are indications that the Bundesliga side could sell him for €100 million.
Josko Gvardiol Shines Bright
Gvardiol, who joined Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in 2021 for €18 million, has already made a significant impact with 87 appearances, five goals, and three assists. At just 21 years of age, he has also won two German Cups with Die Rotten Bullen.
Gvardiol has previously expressed his admiration for Liverpool. Asked which club he dreamed of playing for as a boy, he said:
“It would definitely be Liverpool. I watched a lot of Liverpool games with my father and covered every season in detail. It’s a club that has stayed in my heart.”
But there is no current indication that the club is pursuing his signing this summer. Liverpool’s focus is primarily on bolstering their midfield, with plans to make two or three additions in that area. It remains to be seen if Manchester City can reach an agreement with Leipzig to secure his services this summer.
