Liverpool are facing serious trouble as Man City are looking to hunt down Martin Zubimendi as a Rodri replacement and building squad depth
Due to Rodri’s ACL injury, he will miss the remainder of the 2024–2025 season, this has led to rumors that Manchester City will sign a replacement during the January transfer window.
Although Ilkay Gundogan, John Stones, Mateo Kovacic and other players could step in for Rodri, it would be challenging to replace him due to his special influence as the greatest defensive midfielder in the world.
Liverpool and City want Zubimendi
Martin Zubimendi is still a target for Manchester City and Liverpool according to Fabrizio Romano.
This could cause issues for the Reds who were hoping to sign the Real Sociedad midfield player during the summer transfer window.
Fabrizio Romano stated on his YouTube channel,
“Liverpool didn’t sign another midfielder this summer because they only add players when they see top level, top potential, top value.
This case, the case of [Martin] Zubimendi, is also very clear — they tried in every way to get him. So, Liverpool interest remains.”
After coming on as a substitute for Rodri in the Euro 2024 final and putting on a fantastic display Zubimendi established himself as a top midfield player.
In addition to providing Manchester City with a superior substitute for Rodri, Zubimendi’s signing would be a setback for Liverpool who have the Spanish international marked as a major target for their midfield.
By strengthening their own squad depth and effectively weakening a Premier League rival the Sky Blues could make it more difficult for Liverpool to compete both domestically and in Europe.
Despite Ryan Gravenberch’s success at Liverpool, as their starting defensive midfielder it remains to be seen if he can sustain his form and fitness throughout the season.
In order to bolster their roster Liverpool may decide to pick up Zubimendi again but they will have fierce competition from City who has a history of having the resources and drive to outmaneuver their rivals in the transfer market.
