Liverpool finally sign star attacker who had LFC ‘on his radar as a landing spot’: Is he really needed?

Liverpool have finally landed the first transfer of this summer as they sign Federico Chiesa, Fabrizio Romano confirms.

LFC have not been quite lucky in the summer transfer window of 2024. The reign of Arne Slot started this season after Jurgen Klopp left Anfield in May.

To kickstart his Merseyside era, the Dutchman mastermind needs a defensive-midfield signing for the team to fully function.

However, the Reds’ prime target, Martin Zubimendi, ditched the transfer which was almost done and chose to stay at Real Sociedad.

This delayed the possibility of their first potentially successful summer transfer in 2024. Another target Giorgi Mamardashvili has signed for the club but will arrive at the Anfield in 2025.

But the day has come when the Kopites can finally breathe a sigh of relief. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have signed Federico Chiesa for €13m initial fee plus add-ons from Juventus on a four-year deal.

According to the latest update, the Italian attacker has arrived at Liverpool for medicals.

Liverpool sign Federico Chiesa: Is he needed at Merseyside?

The new No. 14 had been on the transfer list of the Reds long before the arrival of Slot.

Chiesa was a target of Jurgen Klopp when Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez or Cody Gakpo had not joined LFC.

The 26-year-old remained on that list since then and he was also ‘very open’ to joining the Merseyside giants and had them ‘on his radar as a landing spot’ as he has sustained the interest to play in the PL.

Although the first signing of the season should be exciting news, the whole scenario is different at Anfield.

The Reds’ attack is already stacked with several great forwards such as Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Ben Doak.

If FSG are thinking of Chiesa as the potential long-term replacement for likely outbound Mohamed Salah then it is fine. But the signing could have waited until next summer.

Right now, what Slot really needs at the moment is a proper defensive midfielder to maintain the shape of the current squad.

As the transfer window is about to close in the next few hours, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool are able to land the much-needed signing of a defensive midfielder.
