Liverpool have placed a €55 million price tag on Virgil van Dijk amid growing interest from several Saudi Pro League clubs.
The Dutch defender, who has just one year remaining on his contract, is reportedly open to a move to the Middle Eastern league this summer.
Talks between Van Dijk’s representatives and the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which manages investments for Saudi clubs, have already taken place, with Van Dijk showing a strong inclination towards joining one of the Saudi teams.
The Saudi Interest
Liverpool are aware of the interest from Saudi clubs and have made their stance clear.
They are willing to sell Van Dijk, but only if their asking price of €55 million (approximately £46.3 million) is met.
However, the PIF considers this price tag to be on the higher side and is currently deliberating on whether to proceed with the deal.
A final decision from the PIF is expected within the next two to three days.
If Liverpool do not lower their asking price, the Saudi clubs may choose to wait until Van Dijk’s contract expires, allowing them to sign him on a pre-contract agreement in January and acquire him as a free agent next summer.
Potential Good Bye
The potential departure of Virgil van Dijk would leave a significant void in Liverpool’s defence, especially after he was named club captain following Jordan Henderson’s exit last season.
Van Dijk has been a mainstay in Liverpool’s backline since his arrival from Southampton in 2018, contributing immensely to the club’s successes, including their Premier League and Champions League triumphs.
Despite the looming possibility of his departure, Liverpool have yet to make any signings this summer.
