Liverpool’s move for Teun Koopmeiners falls flat. Juventus are now leading the race to sign the midfielder much to Liverpool’s dismay.
The Dutch international played impressively against Liverpool in the Europa League last season. He was one of the main players in Atalanta’s Europa League win against Bayer Leverkusen in the final.
Liverpool had previously set up their midfield anew with several key signings, including Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo.
Despite these additions, further recruitment is needed, particularly in the defensive midfield position, where Endo is the sole specialist.
According to transfer reports, Koopmeiners was a top target for Liverpool boss Arne Slot. However, the interest seems to be fading day by day.
Italian sports outlet Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Juventus is inching closer towards landing the midfielder. Atalanta on the other hand are anticipating substantial offers from heavyweight Premier League clubs.
But a serious offer from any Premier League club is yet to knock at Atalanta’s door. This scenario creates an opportunity for Juventus to solidify their squad with Koopmeiners.
Koopmeiners Ready For A New Challenge
The 26-year-old midfielder has openly discussed his future and his preference does not indicate another season with Atalanta.
In an interview with De Telegraaf in March, he was clear about his readiness for a new challenge in England.
“I have indicated to Atalanta that I want to make a move next summer. But there must be something very nice to exchange that for Atalanta.
My girlfriend and I are having a great time in Italy, but I can put up with the rain for some clubs in England!
I hope there will be great options that I can think about. And then I hope that Atalanta receives a nice amount for me, because I had a wonderful time there.”
The expected transfer fee for Koopmeiners is around $43 million (£34 m/ €40 m). Juventus have already signed another former Liverpool target Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa. Now they have set their eye on another Liverpool target Koopmeiners.
The Italian club also offloaded players like Samuel Iling Junior, and Enzo Barrenechea which helped them generate a transfer fund of around $21 million (£16m/€20m).
Now with the Dutch midfielder practically lost, Liverpool’s new manager Arne Slot might shift his focus to the other vulnerable positions in the squad.
As of now, Liverpool are left with only Endo and English player Stefan Bajcetic for the defensive midfield position.
