Liverpool have now shown interest in the Uruguayan midfielder, Manuel Ugarte along with their other targets for the summer.
Moreover, the agent of Ugarte has also confirmed the Reds’ interest in the 22-year-old. However, Jorge Chijane, who is the player’s agent has explained that Liverpool aren’t the only club interested in the player’s services.
In fact, he has said that the Sporting player has a lot of clubs to choose from. Also, the player would resolve his future after the Premier League and Portuguese Primeira Liga seasons come to a close.
Liverpool target, Manuel Ugarte: a matter of time before the Reds make a move
Liverpool have followed the midfielder since he joined Sporting Lisbon from F.C. Famalicão back in 2021. Moreover, while the club haven’t had any formal talks, the player is certainly on their list of midfield targets.
Some of the other midfield targets include Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch.
Chijane, who works with super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has Liverpool stars Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Fabinho on his roster, confirmed that interest when asked by a Portuguese media outlet.
”Liverpool? There is a lot of talk, but it is not the only club, there are others. There is a lot of talk, but I am still not sure about the club (he will sign with).
There are many possibilities on the table. I believe that in 15 days the situation will be resolved.”
However, the agent has confirmed that Ugarte is sure to leave the Portuguese club this summer. The player has some of the best defensive stats and has put out some exceptional performances.
“It’s almost certain that he won’t stay, it’s sure he’ll leave. Soon I’ll be in Lisbon.”
Reaction from the Reds’ camp
Mendes played a key role in bringing Nunez, who is a friend of Uruguay team-mate Ugarte. Also, he has maintained a close relationship with Liverpool’s departing director of football Julian Ward.
Meanwhile, the Reds’ captain, Jordan Henderson insists he isn’t concerned about the likely new midfield arrivals at Anfield this summer.
“I don’t buy into things that get said from the outside. You can see more from the inside when you’re involved.
You don’t really pay too much attention. Of course you need to sign new players. It’s always important to freshen the squad and improve the team.
I think if it’s just centred around one position, I don’t particularly agree with that but we have to improve in all parts of the team.”
