The knockout phase playoff draw takes place on January 31, 2025, at 11 AM GMT in Nyon, Switzerland. This stage involves teams that finished between 9th and 24th in the league phase, with the winners progressing to the Round of 16.

Liverpool’s real moment of truth arrives later. The Round of 16 draw, where they will finally discover their opponent, is set for February 21, 2025—after the playoffs conclude.

Which opponents can Liverpool Face?

UEFA’s revamped knockout format ensures that the top two teams—Liverpool (1st) and Barcelona (2nd)—cannot meet until the final, rewarding their dominant performances. However, that doesn’t mean an easy ride for the Reds.

Their Round of 16 opponent will be one of four potential teams, emerging from two playoff fixtures:

  • Paris Saint-Germain (15th) vs. Brest (18th)
  • Benfica (16th) vs. AS Monaco (17th)

Theoretically, Brest or Monaco would be the most favorable opponents, given their struggles in the league phase. However, PSG loom as the biggest threat, despite their low ranking. The French giants, led by their attacking firepower, secured a 4-2 win over Manchester City on their way to the knockouts.

Meanwhile, Monaco have already proven their mettle. They have stunned Barcelona 2-1 in their opening match, while Benfica’s European pedigree makes them a tricky prospect.

Regardless of who they face, Liverpool have one key advantage. The will be playing the second leg at Anfield, where their European nights are legendary.

With Liverpool sitting atop the Premier League standings and competing in all four competitions, their campaign is shaping up to be one for the history books. Whether Arne Slot’s side can turn this season into something truly special will depend largely on how they navigate the Champions League knockouts.

For now, the wait is on—who will stand in Liverpool’s way on their road to Munich?
