Liverpool midfielder set for long-awaited return after injury blow

Liverpool midfielder James McConnell is back on the training pitch after a long battle with injury, and fans are excited to see what’s next for the young midfielder.

The 20-year-old has been sidelined since pre-season, missing crucial games and opportunities that could have furthered his career. Now, he’s eyeing a strong comeback, hoping to reclaim his spot and make an impact.

A slow and frustrating road to injury recovery for Liverpool star

McConnell’s rise through Liverpool’s ranks had shown promise. Last season, under Jurgen Klopp, he enjoyed a breakout year and even earned a League Cup winners’ medal after making nine first-team appearances.

Many expected him to join fellow Liverpool youngsters on loan this season, gaining more experience and game time. Clubs like Hull, Blackburn, Derby, Huddersfield, and Birmingham were reportedly interested in his services.

However, a long-term ankle injury disrupted those plans. Despite travelling with Liverpool’s senior team to the U.S. for pre-season, McConnell couldn’t play a single game due to the injury.

As a result, his progress slowed, and his loan opportunities faded. Instead of building on his first-team experience, he was left to focus on his recovery at Merseyside.

Now, McConnell’s patience and hard work are beginning to pay off. This week, he joined an outdoor training session at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre.

It’s a big step for the midfielder, marking his first real action on the pitch since his injury. The session included several key academy players, including Harvey Elliott, who also recently returned from a fractured foot. While Elliott’s return drew attention, McConnell’s participation slipped under the radar.

When can James McConnell return for Liverpool?

Although he may not immediately jump back into senior action, McConnell’s return to training is promising.

His comeback will likely begin with Liverpool’s academy squad, where he’ll aim to regain full match fitness.

Barry Lewtas’ U21 side doesn’t have a fixture until their Premier League 2 match against Reading on November 30. This could be the perfect opportunity for McConnell to return to competitive action.

For McConnell, the next goal is clear: to show he’s ready for a senior call-up under new manager Arne Slot.

After months of frustration and missed chances, the young midfielder is back, and Liverpool fans will be hoping his hard work leads to success.
