Liverpool’s return to the pitch will carry more than just footballing weight. The club reportedly is in talks with the Football Association (FA) and Crystal Palace to honour Diogo Jota during the Community Shield match at Wembley on August 10.
Jota, 28, passed away tragically in a car crash in Spain alongside his younger brother, Andre Silva.
The brothers were driving back to England after Jota had been advised not to fly following recent surgery.
That road trip ended in heartbreak — and now, Liverpool’s curtain-raiser for the new season will begin with remembrance.
The Community Shield is often a fresh start, a chance to talk tactics and trophies. But this year, it’ll begin with tributes instead of team talks.
As per BBC Sport, The FA is expected to finalise details after discussions with both clubs, with gestures such as black armbands or a minute’s silence likely to be included.

How Liverpool plans to pay tribute to Diogo Jota?
Liverpool have already paused their pre-season, but the club is working on a broader tribute for one of their own.
Fans have filled Anfield’s 97 Avenue with flowers, shirts, and messages. Former captain Jordan Henderson and even local rivals Everton have joined the outpouring of grief.
Now, the Wembley stage may become a place to celebrate Jota’s life. And as Reds fans know, honouring a fallen player is something this club does with heart. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will likely echo louder than ever that evening.
The funeral for Jota and Andre is set to take place in Portugal on Saturday. Some teammates are expected to attend. Jota leaves behind his wife Rute and their three children, as well as his heartbroken parents.
Mohamed Salah said it as everyone feels it: “Team mates come and go but not like this… They will never be forgotten.”
