Liverpool’s quest for a top-four finish in the Premier League has been dealt a blow with the confirmation of a fresh injury concern for Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan is currently being assessed ahead of their upcoming match against Aston Villa.
The Reds battle for a top-four finish
Nunez was unable to participate in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 victory over Leicester City due to a foot injury, which has left The Reds just one point behind Newcastle United and Manchester United in the race for the coveted Champions League spots.
With both Newcastle and Man United having a game in hand, the battle for a top-four finish is expected to go down to the wire. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had hoped to have Nunez back in action for the crucial upcoming fixtures. However, the striker’s foot injury forced him to withdraw from the match at the King Power Stadium, with the team making a decision to exclude him from the squad.
Nunez injury blow
Klopp explained the situation, stating that Nunez felt discomfort in his big toe after a training session. The distance between the training ground and the match venue played a role in the decision-making process, as it required prompt action. Although Nunez expressed his desire to support the team, his availability was compromised due to the injury.
Klopp explained pre-match:
“Yesterday we trained and he looked OK but afterwards he said he felt something in his toe so we had to make a decision.”
When questioned about the possibility of Nunez missing the final two matches against Villa and Southampton, Klopp remained optimistic, stating that he didn’t believe the injury would sideline the forward for the remainder of the season. Further assessment and evaluation of the injury would be conducted to determine Nunez’s availability.
Klopp added:
“No, I don’t think so, the session didn’t look like that but after the session he felt it more than before and so we have to assess that in more detail.”
Despite limited starts in recent games, Nunez has been influential coming off the bench and has featured in the team’s previous 13 matches.
Liverpool’s attacking options have been bolstered by the return of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo’s consistent improvement. Nunez, still adapting to Klopp’s style and learning English, is expected to benefit from a full pre-season preparation.
Nunez’s injury setback adds to Liverpool’s challenges in securing a top-four finish. The Uruguayan forward has made significant contributions throughout the season, with 15 goals and four assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.
Klopp and the team will be closely monitoring his progress and working towards his swift recovery to strengthen their chances of Champions League qualification.
