Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo has addressed his lack of playing time this season, revealing a candid conversation with manager Arne Slot about his role in the squad.
The Japanese international, known for his team-first attitude, has struggled for minutes under Slot. He managed just six outings and 20 Premier League minutes so far this campaign.

Speaking on Red Machine – The Wataru Endo Podcast, the 31-year-old reflected on his current situation:
“I’ve talked with him. He told me the same thing he said in that interview. So, I think that’s what I need to do at the moment and I’m so grateful that he knows that I always try to work hard on the pitch. It’s good that he came to me to talk about that. To play for Liverpool is not easy, so the manager told me that we needed everyone.”
Wataru Endo opens up on limited game time under Slot
Endo’s words underline his commitment to the team despite falling behind in the midfield pecking order. Ryan Gravenberch has established himself as the primary defensive midfielder, supported by Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Harvey Elliott.
Endo’s passing ability and on-ball contributions have not matched Gravenberch’s level, but his work rate and defensive tenacity remain valuable assets.

Slot recently praised Endo’s impact during Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over Southampton, where the midfielder played a crucial 10-minute cameo:
“Wata Endo came in, maybe only for 10 minutes. But he was important in that 10 minutes with the amount of balls he won and the effort he put in. So, that’s what in the end makes the team strong and that’s what we need.”
Endo’s role in Klopp’s final season was significant, with 43 appearances across all competitions. While his game time has diminished under Slot, the relentless schedule ahead could see him feature more prominently.
Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures, including the Champions League clash against Girona on December 10 and the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Southampton on December 18, present opportunities for Endo to shine.
As injuries and fatigue inevitably take their toll, Endo’s experience and hard-working mentality could become pivotal. While he waits for his chance, the Japanese international continues to embody professionalism and perseverance, traits that endear him to fans and teammates alike.
