David Ornstein has confirmed that Liverpool are looking to sign center-backs, but only if the transfer of Sepp Van Den Berg and Joe Gomez are done. Van Den Berg has already joined Brentford on a permanent deal and Joe Gomez is considering options to leave.
Ornstein also talked about the contract situation of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, and Mohammed Salah.
With only a week left in the transfer window Liverpool are the only team yet to make signings in the Premier League.
Ornstein provides Liverpool transfer updates
Liverpool are currently short on centre-backs. If Joe Gomez also leaves before the window closes, Liverpool will be left with only Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Jarell Quansah as center-back options.
David Ornstein via The Overlap: “What you do pick up in conversations is that Liverpool are looking at that position (CB) but it would take some departures and probably both Gomez and Van den Berg.”
Ornstein on contract updates: “They should move heaven and earth to keep Trent. Trent Alexander-Arnold has qualities like nobody else in this country. It would very sad if they didn’t strike a deal with him.”
Ornstein also revealed Liverpool won’t just sign any player, if the right player is available they are not shy to get in the transfer market
“Virgil Van Dijk is at a different stage of his career obviously. He may have thoughts on his future as well, I’m really not sure on that one.” On Van Dijk’s contract situation
“There’s a presumption that he will leave as a free agent in the summer of 2025 of course that is possible. I just think it’s open and I don’t imagine all three ( Van Dijk, Trent, Salah) will renew.” On Salah’s contract.
Ornstein also said Liverpool won’t be in transfer market for another 6. They felt Zubimendi was a great market opportunity and won’t look for a replacement.
