Following their announcement of plans to pedestrianize portions of Anfield Road,an area affected by the stadium’s recent expansion Liverpool have come under fire from Labour Councilor Ellie Byrne.
Byrne called out the club for showing contempt for the area and for ignoring its social duty to the community.
Councilor blasts Liverpool for their new Anfield plans
Residents who are already irritated with the disruptions brought on by the stadium’s expansion during the previous three years have become enraged by the proposal.
She said on X,
“I will completely and utterly fight against this planning application and oppose it wholeheartedly.
LFC have took no responsibility in how our area looks, just look at the roads and general area.
I understand LCC has a major part to play. However, a corporation who is making millions of pounds of profit out of our area should have social responsibility to the area and residents. I know other football clubs do!
Stop treating our area with contempt. That road has been shut for YEARS due to the stadium expansion and the promise was Anfield Road would always go back to being a road. We know what the original promise was, via Anfield Road so are you now not keeping it?”
The plan which aims to improve accessibility around the stadium would permanently close a portion of Anfield Road that has been restricted due to construction but it would not alter the stadium itself.
Under the ownership of Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool FC have made significant investments to transform Anfield into a premier venue bringing in events that have greatly boosted the local economy.
The community however may strongly oppose the proposed changes because they believe the club’s interests have taken precedence over their worries.
The discussion draws attention to the continuous conflict between Liverpool’s goals and the expectations of the community.
