Liverpool agrees £75 million deal but club ‘pulled the plug on the move’
According to the reports Liverpool had agreed a £75million deal to sign Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon but Newcastle pulled the plug on the move.
The transfer saga with Gordon emerged back in June. Newcastle were forced to sell some players due to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), and Gordon was a player they identified to offload.
Liverpool Agreed £75 million Deal For Anthony Gordon?
According to Ian Doyle of the Liverpool Echo:
“Their hand has been shown somewhat with the second transfer having agreed a £75million deal for Anthony Gordon only for Newcastle United to pull the plug on the move.”
It has now come to the limelight of how close Gordon was to joining Liverpool. It is unclear why Newcastle decided to pull the plug on the deal.
To comply with PSR, Newcastle sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest. Newcastle no longer had to sell Gordon to comply with PSR.
It was revealed last month of how close Liverpool and Newcastle were to agreeing a double swap with Joe Gomez and Anthony Gordon.
In the initial stages of the transfer saga Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah in a swap deal, but Liverpool immediately rejected the approach.
However Gordon is not a player Liverpool need. The reds already have two world class players Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo to play on the left-wing. So Liverpool should look to other players and positions with the funds available.
