Liverpool made Arne Slot’s Premier League debut at Anfield a forgettable one for the Brentford boss, securing a comfortable 2-0 victory and maintaining their perfect start under their new manager.
Much of the pre-match buzz was about Slot’s style of play, but it was a classic Liverpool counterattack that broke the deadlock. Brentford’s corner turned into a Reds’ opportunity, with Luis Diaz leading a rapid charge. A slick one-two with Diogo Jota set the Colombian free, and he hammered home on his 100th appearance for the club.
Andy Robertson had a chance to double the lead, but his effort was turned wide by Brentford’s Mark Flekken. Despite being ahead, Liverpool wasn’t entirely in the driver’s seat, with Brentford threatening sporadically. Still, the defensive duo of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate stood firm, while Ryan Gravenberch kept things tidy in midfield.
The second half saw Liverpool finding more rhythm, much like their performance against Ipswich a week prior. Alisson had to be sharp to deny Nathan Collins, but the Reds continued to create chances. Salah’s mesmerizing dribble nearly led to a spectacular team goal, and Diaz remained a constant thorn in Brentford’s side.
Liverpool Player Ratings vs. Brentford
Alisson Becker (7)
The Brazilian shot-stopper had a relatively quiet afternoon but was alert when needed. His quick reflexes to deny Collins kept the clean sheet intact. Reliable as ever.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (7)
Trent was his usual self, delivering pinpoint passes and showing defensive solidity. The chemistry with Szoboszlai and Salah is starting to click, hinting at more to come from this trio.
Ibrahima Konate (8)
Dominant in the air and composed on the ground, Konate dealt with Brentford’s physicality with ease. His partnership with Van Dijk looks solid and should hold firm as they head to Old Trafford next.
Virgil van Dijk (8)
The captain led by example, calmly organizing the backline and launching attacks with his trademark long balls. Van Dijk’s influence is immense, making everything look effortless.
Andy Robertson (7)
The Scotsman wasn’t as involved in the attack as usual, but he was a rock defensively, keeping Bryan Mbuemo quiet. Came close to scoring twice, showing he’s always a threat going forward.
Ryan Gravenberch (7)
Aside from a rash challenge that earned him a yellow card, Gravenberch was composed and confident on the ball. He walked a fine line after his booking but managed the game well.
Dominik Szoboszlai (7)
The Hungarian midfielder showed his work ethic by tracking back to recover possession after a couple of loose passes. Still finding his rhythm, but this performance was another step in the right direction.
Alexis Mac Allister (7)
A much-improved display from the Argentine, who looked more comfortable in his role. His passing was crisp, and he helped Liverpool control the tempo. A positive outing as he edges closer to his best form.
Mohamed Salah (8)
The Egyptian King was in fine form, shrugging off defenders and creating chances. His dribbling was a joy to watch, and he contributed defensively as well. Salah looks ready to lead the line this season.
Diogo Jota (8)
Jota’s assist for Diaz was a thing of beauty, perfectly weighted and timed. While he didn’t do much else, his impact in the final third was decisive, proving his worth as a clinical forward.
Luis Diaz (8)
Diaz was electric, terrorizing Brentford’s defense all afternoon. His goal and assist capped off a brilliant performance on his milestone appearance. He’s hitting form at just the right time.
Substitutes
Darwin Nunez (6)
Nunez wasn’t heavily involved but showed flashes of quality with a few neat touches. He’ll need to be patient for his starting chances, but the talent is undeniable.
Cody Gakpo (6)
The Dutchman nearly marked his appearance with a screamer, but his shot clipped the bar. Gakpo offered a different dimension when he came on, looking sharp and hungry.
Conor Bradley (6)
Brought on to give Trent a breather, Bradley showed his usual energy and drive. It’s clear that he’ll be a valuable squad member this season.
Harvey Elliott (6)
Elliott looked lively, eager to make an impact after missing out in the last game. He found himself in good positions but just lacked the final product. Time is on his side, though.
Wataru Endo (N/A)
Came on too late to make an impact, but his presence adds depth to the squad.
