It seems Liverpool are dusting off their check book again, this time ready to go head-to-head with the big boys in a race for German sensation Florian Wirtz.
According to the latest rumblings, the Reds are willing to fork out a jaw-dropping £100 million for the 21-year-old, and why not? After all, what is another massive transfer fee in today’s market, right?
Wirtz, the midfield maestro currently tearing it up for Bayer Leverkusen, has caught the eye of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and of course, Liverpool. But while Los Blancos are apparently in pole position to land the youngster.
It seems Liverpool have decided to throw their hat in the ring and make things interesting. After a summer that did not exactly set the transfer world alright, it is about time, right?
Sure, Liverpool made some decent signings in August, like Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili, but the engine room still needs a little more horsepower.
Martin Zubimendi was supposed to be the big catch of the summer. But after those talks went south, Liverpool’s transfer window quietly fizzled out. Enter Wirtz – an 18-goal midfielder who’s been tearing up the Bundesliga and making defenders look like traffic cones.
Liverpool eyeing Wirtz
But here is the kicker: despite all this noise, don’t expect any dramatic swoop in January. According to reports, the Reds are in no hurry to splash the cash in the winter window.
And let’s face it, prying Wirtz away from Leverkusen in the middle of the season is about as likely as Jurgen Klopp going a week without complaining about fixture congestion.
The Bundesliga side knows they have got a hot commodity, and letting go now would be, well, bad for business.
With Wirtz already off to a flying start this season – four goals in four Bundesliga games, plus a brace in Leverkusen’s Champions League opener. As a result, the race for his signature is heating up.
Whether Liverpool can actually outmuscle Real Madrid and Bayern for his services is the real question. But hey, if anyone can turn up with a £100 m offer and a charming pitch about Merseyside’s weather, it is Liverpool. Stay tuned.
