Tottenham’s centre-back Cristian Romero has caught the attention of some of football’s greatest players. Lionel Messi, the legendary Argentine forward, and Javier Mascherano, a former Liverpool star, have both hailed Romero as the world’s best defender.

Romero joined Tottenham in 2021 for £42 million and has consistently shown his talent, especially in international competitions.

He played a crucial role in Argentina’s Copa America victory in 2021 and their World Cup win the following year.

His performances have been so impressive that Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, praised him openly after a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador.

Messi and Mascherano Praise Stellar Performance by Romero

“To me, he is the best defender in the world right now. Amazing performance tonight, man of the match,”

Messi told journalists last year, emphasizing Romero’s exceptional skills on the pitch.

Backing up Messi’s claim, Javier Mascherano, the Argentina U23s boss and former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder, also spoke highly of Romero.

“Cuti Romero is among the best center-backs in the world, if he’s not the best already. We don’t know what his ceiling is,”

Mascherano said.

He highlighted Romero’s importance to Tottenham, noting his consistent performances and the praise he receives from his coach.

Romero’s Rise to Stardom

Romero’s journey to becoming a top defender began with his impressive stint in Serie A, where he was named Best Defender in the 2020/21 season.

Since moving to Tottenham, he has become an essential player under manager Ange Postecoglou, known for his strong tackles, aggression, and smooth passing.

Last season, he missed only five league games and helped Spurs achieve 18 Premier League clean sheets.

With the current Copa America underway, Romero is once again proving his worth on the international stage. He aims to add another Copa America winners’ medal to his collection before returning to Tottenham for the new season as Argentina defeated Ecuador on Penalties to go all the way to the semifinals.

The Messi-led team is favourite to retain the title as they will now face the winner of Canada vs. Venezuela in the semis.
