Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that Darwin Nunez has recovered from his injury and will be ready to start when Liverpool host Chelsea in the next Premier League fixture.
Liverpool are suffering from injuries in the last few weeks. Key players like Diogo Jota, Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino, and Arthur Melo are out of the squad, along with the Uruguayan forward.
Nunez has been sidelined since the last week after suffering a minor hamstring issue. This has forced the German manager to use Cody Gakpo up in front.
While this has also led to poor performances from the Holland international. The ex-PSV player is most comfortable in the wide. His true ability is to drift from the wing into the central position and create problems for the opposition. However, the 23-year-old is yet to shine in a Red shirt.
Fortunately, the young LFC star Harvey Elliott stepped up with a winner against Wolves. The 19-year-old’s spectacular was irresistible for the Wolves’ goalkeeper.
Klopp on Darwin Nunez injury
Klopp speaking after the 1-0 victory at Molineux said,
“I hope that Darwin is coming back in training tomorrow or Thursday, so might be then in contention, of course”,
he explained.
However, the German also admitted that
“Not all players who played the last game are available now, for different reasons.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said that the Reds are missing Darwin Nunez more than any other player at the moment.
The Uruguayan joined the Reds this summer with a hefty price tag and a lot of expectations. The 23-year-old has played 13 matches for the Reds, where he scored 5 and assisted 2 goals. He might not have the numbers in his favour but his runs behind the opponent’s defence are goal-threatening. Thus, if he is fit again the 23-year-old we definitely retain his place in the starting XI this Saturday.
The German head coach when asked about the injury problems, he mentioned
“ Kosty [Tsimikas] got a knock in the back”
at Wolves, while Stefan Bajcetic was forced off with cramps.
Klopp on his next PL fixture squad said
“of course, the door is open for everybody. We have to fight, whoever’s ready to fight has a good chance to play.”
