World Cup winner reveals why Liverpool star is among the best in the world
In recent years, Liverpool and Manchester City have given Premier League fans one of the fiercest rivalries in football. At the center of many of these heated battles was Julian Alvarez, who knows all too well what it is like to face Liverpool at their best especially under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp and the captaincy of Virgil van Dijk.
Alvarez spent two successful seasons at Manchester City. He was part of the historic treble-winning side under Pep Guardiola before he joined Atletico Madrid this summer.
During his time in England, he not only lifted trophies but also faced some of the toughest defenders in the world. And, in a recent interview with ESPN, Alvarez singled out one Liverpool player who stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Alvarez named Virgil van Dijk as one of the three hardest defenders the former City star has ever faced. About the Liverpool captain the attacker said:
“Van Dijk, because he’s very strong. He’s one of the best defenders in the world.”

Also having scored his first-ever goal for City against Liverpool in the 2022 Community Shield, Alvarez knows all too well the challenges that come with facing the Reds at their best. And for him, Van Dijk has consistently been a towering presence. Van Dijk has been making life difficult for any attacker who crosses his path.
The endorsement from Alvarez comes as no surprise. Many consider the Dutch defender one of the best in his position, with his influence at Liverpool being a key reason for their success under manager Jurgen Klopp.
This season, under new boss Arne Slot, Van Dijk has continued to show why he’s regarded as one of the top center-backs in world football. While Alvarez may have escaped facing Van Dijk regularly with his move to La Liga. But Liverpool now face a different challenge – ensuring they keep their star defender at Anfield.
With Van Dijk’s contract set to expire at the end of this season, Liverpool must prioritize a new deal for their captain. As letting him go would be a massive blow for the club.
