FSG set to flex? Journalist reveals Liverpool’s January transfer plan

Liverpool’s January transfer plans are under scrutiny as the club faces questions over squad depth and the future of key players, including Mohamed Salah.

Ryan Gravenberch has become indispensable in the midfield, especially given his composure, ball-carrying ability, and resilience under pressure.

However, Liverpool lack a clear alternative should he be unavailable, raising concerns over whether the squad is equipped to sustain its successful start to the season.

Despite Liverpool’s midfield depth includes Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, and Dominik Szoboszlai. But there is uncertainty around whether these players can consistently replicate Gravenberch’s impact.

Endo has filled in during Carabao Cup matches. But for critical Premier League or Champions League games, the club may need a stronger option if Gravenberch’s role becomes vacant.

Liverpool’s January transfer outlook

Noted journalist James Pearce suggests Liverpool fans temper their January expectations. According to Pearce, the club’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, maintained a quiet summer window by only finalizing deals for Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili, with the latter yet to arrive.

This restrained approach has not hindered Liverpool. Under new coach Arne Slot, the Reds have secured 15 wins from 17 games. They are leading both the Premier League and Champions League standings.

Slot’s confidence in his squad depth makes significant January signings unlikely unless injuries mount to opportunities arise for top-tier talent, similar to Liverpool’s mid-season captures of Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo in recent years.

Will Liverpool seize January advantage?

Liverpool’s transfer strategy has traditionally been cautious, although high-impact January acquisition like Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, and Virgil van Dijk highlight the potential value of a well-timed move.

Slot could potentially field two competitive starting XIs when at full strength. But injuries are a reality of elite football, as shown by last season’s struggles when Liverpool’s squad depth was tested.

While Pearce advises against expecting a “Chelsea-style” spree, he acknowledges that January remains an opportunity for Liverpool to solidify their title charge.

With Manchester City and Arsenal likely chasing, Liverpool have a rare chance to create a buffer at the top. Capitalizing on this position could turn a promising season into trophy-winning one.
