Carragher’s team is a mix of a variety of players who have brought glory to Anfield over the years in a traditional 4-4-2 formation. In goal, he chose Ray Clemence over current Alisson Becker. While Alisson has played an important role in Liverpool’s recent success, Carragher pointed to Clemence’s unmatched trophy haul, which includes five league titles and three European Cups as the deciding factor.
Moving to defense, Carragher faced another tough decision between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Neal to fill his right-back position. He ultimately went with Neal, who was a key figure in Liverpool’s dominant run through the 1970s and 80s, collecting eight league titles and four European Cups.
In the centre-back, Carragher put Virgil van Dijk beside Alan Hansen, who is regarded as one of the club’s all-time great players. Steve Nicol, who could play almost any position, was his left-back, he also had good attacking qualities.
Carragher’s midfield saw two undeniable figures: Steven Gerrard and Graeme Souness. Gerrard was Liverpool’s talisman from the early 21st century and is seen as the greatest player for the club, while Souness captained the club at the very top in their successful period during the late 70s and early 80s. Carragher selected Mohamed Salah for the right wing and John Barnes on the left.
Salah had shown his goal-scoring prowess and was the player he had to include, while Barnes was considered one of the greatest wingers in the history of the game and made an impact in his 10 years at Liverpool.
Up front, Carragher chose the legendary partnership of Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish. Rush was chosen as the Reds’ all-time top goal scorer because of his historical tendency to net crucial goals for Liverpool. Dalglish is a natural inclusion too, given he defines Liverpool’s golden generations and made all those contributions as a player and manager.
