Former Liverpool striker reveals key insight on new signing Jeremie Frimpong

Liverpool’s Dutch connection continues to strengthen following the £29.5m arrival of right-back Jeremie Frimpong.

Now, one former Red with strong Bundesliga ties has revealed exactly what fans can expect from the flying Dutchman.

Erik Meijer, once a Liverpool striker and now a respected Bundesliga pundit, believes Frimpong is ready to make an instant impact at Anfield under Arne Slot.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Meijer said:

“He played a good season this year and for him, it’s a huge step up. You need somebody who is really believing in you. He should get that at Liverpool and rise up again.”

Meijer explains how Jeremie Frimpong will fit in Liverpool system

Meijer also highlighted the tactical flexibility Frimpong brings, having operated both as a wing-back and full-back for Bayer Leverkusen.

“In some games they played with four at the back and he was the one on the right side. So for him it’s not a problem, he played both systems,” Meijer explained.

“That’s always nice for a coach, that you have somebody on that position who’s flexible.”

With Trent Alexander-Arnold now at Real Madrid, the Dutchman is expected to compete with Conor Bradley for the starting right-back spot.

And while his defensive game is still evolving, Meijer is convinced Frimpong’s offensive qualities and blistering pace will add a new dimension.

“We’ll see what we have seen from him in the last couple of seasons. That’s his speed, his ability of going one-on-one,” said Meijer.

One factor that gives Frimpong an edge, according to Meijer, is the trust he is likely to receive from manager Arne Slot and the comfort of joining a squad already rich in Dutch talent.

“He knows England. He knows the culture over there, he knows what people expect from him,” Meijer added.

“He’s coming home. He speaks perfect English. But for Slot, he is also somebody he can teach or communicate with in your own language.”

As for expectations, Meijer believes the player is likely to be in the team from day one and the Liverpool fan in him hopes to see Frimpong lift trophies at Anfield soon.
