Florian Wirtz opens up on first season target after Liverpool announce signing

Liverpool have added a fresh spark to their midfield with the arrival of Florian Wirtz. The German star has completed his move from Bayer Leverkusen, becoming the latest new face under Arne Slot’s rebuild at Anfield.

The 22-year-old was officially unveiled today after passing his medical and signing a long-term contract.

With plenty of hype around the transfer, Wirtz wasted no time in setting the tone for what fans can expect — and what he wants to achieve in his debut season.

What Florian Wirtz said in his first Liverpool interview?

“I want to win everything”: wirtz lays down ambitious goal

Wirtz, known for his vision and creativity, made it clear he’s not just here for a new experience — he’s here to win. Speaking to the club’s official website, the German playmaker said:

“I would like to win everything every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work. In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”

It’s a bold target, but then again, Wirtz isn’t your average new signing. He arrives on Merseyside after helping Leverkusen go unbeaten in the Bundesliga during their 2023-24 double-winning campaign.

Oh, and he also scored six goals in nine Champions League games — not bad for a midfielder still in his early 20s.

Now, Wirtz links up with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong and joins a squad already brimming with talent. And while the Premier League is a different beast, Wirtz seems eager to take it on.

“I’m really looking forward to playing my first game,” he said. “Every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game.”

Liverpool fans will be hoping he brings the same magic he showed in Germany. If he does, defenses across England might want to start Wirtz-proofing their tactics.
