In recent weeks, rumours have swirled around potential moves involving Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, with both players reportedly linked to transfers despite the transfer closing over a month ago.
However, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has firmly dismissed these speculations, stating that there is no truth to either of the potential deals. Rodrygo has faced increasing competition for a starting spot at Real Madrid, with the arrivals of star players like Kylian Mbappe and rising talent Endrick.
What is happening with Rodrygo and Nunez?
While Rodrygo continues to start under Carlo Ancelotti, some reports had suggested a possible move to Liverpool as Real Madrid look to balance their squad. Romano, however, insists that any rumours of such a transfer are far from accurate.
Liverpool have made a few signings this summer, including Federico Chiesa for £12 million and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili, whose £29 million transfer will be finalized next summer. Despite these moves, Romano assures fans that Rodrygo is not headed to Anfield.
Similarly, Darwin Nunez’s name has been tossed around in connection with a move to Atletico Madrid. And, Fichajes is touting Nunez with a move to the Spanish capital.
Some reports had even speculated about a potential player swap, with Nunez going to Atletico and former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez joining Liverpool. However, Romano has shut down these rumours as well, explaining that there is no basis for them.
Nunez remains focused on his role at Liverpool. And Atletico Madrid, having spent £75 million plus add-ons on Alvarez, is unlikely to pursue the Uruguayan striker. The Italian journalist said in his Daily Briefing:
“It’s difficult for me even to comment the Rodrygo and Darwin Núñez rumors, guys…
I don’t even know where these links are coming from. Núñez to Atlético Madrid, Rodrygo to Liverpool… trust me, now it’s all completely quiet.
There are no negotiations or talks for these players, Núñez is completely focused on Liverpool and Atlético just spent €75m plus add-ons on Julián Alvarez two months ago.”
The Uruguayan has lost his place as first-choice striker
Darwin Nunez kicked off his Liverpool career with a decent 15 goals and four assists. But let’s not forget the countless missed chances that left fans sighing. Improvement was expected, and last season, he upped his game with 18 goals and 13 assists.

Yet, after an eight-game dry spell, Liverpool began benching him for Diogo Jota. Now, under Arne Slot, Nunez can barely sniff a starting spot, with just three starts in nine games.
But don’t worry – despite rumours of an Atletico move, Romano assures us he is staying put. So, maybe Nunez will make a comeback.… eventually.
