Ex-Liverpool star poised for Premier League comeback with West Ham
Joel Matip, once the stalwart of Liverpool’s backline, is reportedly on the brink of a rather unexpected return to the Premier League – this time with West Ham.
Since parting ways with Liverpool in June, the Cameroonian defender has found himself without a club. But, the situation is about to change, if the whispers are to be believed.
Matip was brought to Anfield on a free transfer during the early days of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure. After his arrival, he proved to be one of the savviest pieces of business.
He clocked over 200 appearances and bagged himself an impressive array of silverware, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and not one but two Carabao Cups. However, an injury-plagued final season led Liverpool to decide against extending his stay.
Joel Matip set for return
Now, West Ham have been actively reshuffling their defensive options. And they seem to be considering Matip as a potential solution to their backline problems.
With their recent signings of Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo, and the departures of multiple centre-backs, the Hammers are scanning the free agent market. Matip, along with ex-Sheffield United player John Egan, appears to be among the top choices.
Should this move materialize, it would indeed be a curious twist in Matip’s career trajectory.
The situation of West Ham right now
West Ham were more active than most on deadline day. They secured a loan deal for Paris Saint-Germain’s Carlos Soler. He made his debut to the fans just before Saturday’s home loss to Manchester City.
The Hammers also continued to streamline Julen Lopetegui’s squad, with Nayef Aguerd moving to Real Sociedad, James Ward-Prowse heading to Nottingham Forest, and Maxwel Cornet being picked up by Southampton.
“I think that Carlos Soler is a good player and he is going to help us, for sure.”
Lopetegui said after City’s 3-1 win,
“He is maybe at his best age, as he’s 27, he has international experience and is a very good player. He has a good profile for us as he can play in different positions and I think he is going to help us to be better.”
On the possibility of conducting further business during the international break, the Spaniard added:
“The window is closed and you can now only sign free players right now, and OK, we have to focus on the players who we have in the squad.
“We now lose a lot of players who go with their national teams and we are crossing our fingers that they come back healthy. We will keep working and start thinking about the next challenge.”
