Cody Gakpo breaks Jurgen Klopp’s golden rule in the Merseyside Derby

Klopp to give Cody Gakpo his Liverpool debut

The new Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo opened his goal-scoring account and at the same time broke Jurgen Klopp’s golden rule against Everton in the Merseyside derby.

The ex-PSV star who joined the Reds last month in the winter transfer window scored the second goal alongside Egyptian sensation Mo Salah against Everton. The Dutchman showed his class against the Reds’ arch-rivals.

The Dutch international has made seven appearances for the English giants. His performance got better in each match. Last season the 23-year-old forward had played 27 matches where he scored 12 goals and gave 12 assists with an expected xG of 9.7.

His performance in Qatar World Cup earned him a club record (for PSV) of 37M deal last month.

Although his sensational performance in the Merseyside derby has earned him a lot of praise but one thing that made LFC fans wonder that how he could break Jurgen Klopp’s golden rule that was been set by the German way back in 2016.

What was Jurgen Klopp’s rule broken by Cody Gakpo?

The English giant’s new signing was spotted touching the fabled “This is Anfield” sign which is above the wall overhead where players make their way onto the pitch from the Main Stand at the ground.

This was forbidden by Klopp to his players until they win any silverware back in 2016.

Klopp said back in 2016

“I’ve told my players not to touch the ‘This is Anfield’ sign until they win something. It’s a sign of respect. I touched it when I was manager of Borussia Dortmund but we lost 4-0.”

Although it is very much possible that the Red’s new signing was not aware of this golden rule. But as they say, rules are their to be broken.

While Liverpool fans won’t mind it if they keep on winning and the ex-PSV star keeps on scoring the Merseyside giants.
