Club president ‘confirmed’ Liverpool attempted a late transfer for shock target
In the never-ending carousel of transfer rumours, the latest dalliance of Liverpool involved a name that left many fans scratching their heads: Cesar Huerta.
Yes, you read that right. The 23-year-old Mexican winger, currently dazzling – or at least trying to – at Pumas, was apparently on Liverpool’s radar during the final days of the summer transfer window.
According to reports from Mexico, Liverpool were not only interested but also “very close” to bringing Huerta over at Anfield. Pumas, his current club, was all too willing to help their star pack his bags for England.
With 12 goals and nine assists in 41 appearances last season, you can see why they might have been eager to cash in. The plan, however, was not for Huerta to stroll straight into Arne Slot’s first team and start whipping in crosses at Anfield.

The plan was to transfer him off to Sunderland for a season on loan. Liverpool planned to prepare him in the Championship and bring him back to Anfield next summer.
Huerta was set to travel to UK to finalise a transfer just before Friday’s deadline. However, the deal was nixed after Sunderland rejected a proposal loan move.
Pumas president Gustavo Lema did not exactly hide his pride when confirming Liverpool’s interest in Huerta. Lema told reporters per TUDN:
“El Chino was scouted by one of the best clubs in the world and that is a source of pride.
“What are you going to tell people? That you have a player who was scouted by Liverpool?
“No, people want to win and that is their right. We cannot tell people anything.”
However, he also acknowledged that the deal would not have gone down well with Pumas fans, who might not have appreciated losing their top scorer for the allure of a distant Merseyside dream.
In the end, Huerta remains in Mexico and Liverpool’s left flank remains crowded. And Sunderland will have to find someone else to torment Championship defenses.
