Chelsea star discloses that he almost joined Liverpool on the deadline day

Chelsea star Denis Zakaria revealed that he was on the verge of joining Liverpool rather than Chelsea on deadline day.

Things unravel as the Chelsea star discusses his transfer options from Juventus

The defensive midfielder joined the Blues on loan from Juventus. A deal that seemed to come out of nowhere given that the player had only joined the Serie A powerhouse in January.

Zakaria has now spoken out about his uncertain summer. The swiss revealed that he and his agent were considering a move to the Premier League after finding it difficult to adjust to life at Juventus.

However, the Switzerland international said that Stamford Bridge was not his only option, with a move to Anfield also being considered as Liverpool frantically sought to bolster their midfield.

Zakaria on his move to Chelsea

Zakaria:

It all happened very quickly. I didn’t know a move to Chelsea was possible until six hours before the end of the transfer window.

I think I’ll be happier in England than in Turin. Difficult to say.

Maybe the style of football wasn’t mine. The team was a lot behind, didn’t have that much space. I’m a player who needs a lot of space for my runs. It might suit me better in England.”

Tuchel being one of the many reasons why the Swiss chose the Blues

Zakaria has not yet made his debut for the west Londoners. But Chelsea has the option to purchase him permanently before the end of the current campaign for almost £25 million.

He also acknowledged that playing for Thomas Tuchel was one of the key draws of Chelsea. Unfortunately for him, though, that opportunity would only endure for six days before Tuchel was fired as a result of the team’s dismal start to the season.

Zakaria:

Thomas Tuchel was one of the reasons I went to Chelsea

If the Swiss International would have joined the Reds it might have given more depth in the midfield to Klopp. However, the Red half of the Merseyside welcomed Arthur Melo on the deadline day who is yet to make a start in the Premier League. Currently, Melo is working on his fitness by training with the U21 squad while enjoying his international break.

It will be interesting to see how Arthur Melo fits in the Reds. Will he turn out to be the missing jigsaw piece in the midfield for Klopp’s troop?
