Former professional footballer and current pundit, Tony Cascarino, has suggested that Liverpool might have to consider selling their right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold for a large sum of money to regenerate other areas of their squad.
Trent Alexander-Arnold to be sold?
In an interview on talkSPORT, Cascarino said that although Alexander-Arnold had a difficult year, he is still of the right age, 24, to receive a significant offer from another team.
He also added that the defender is a “Barcelona type of player” and that the Catalan team, or a team that shares their style of play, would be an ideal destination for him.
Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, had revealed in a press conference that Liverpool could not compete with their Premier League rivals in terms of signings and that the club had to be more realistic with its spending.
Klopp’s admission came after Liverpool withdrew from the race for their top target, Jude Bellingham, which left many supporters disappointed.
The repetition of Coutinho’s transfer?
Cascarino pointed out that Liverpool are in the same position as they were a few years ago, just before they sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £142m.
The move enabled Liverpool to bring in Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, addressing two significant issues in the team, and eventually, win the Champions League and Premier League titles.
However, the talkSPORT pundit noted that Liverpool does not have a player like Coutinho, who they can sell for a similar amount of money.
Co-host Natalie Sawyer asked Cascarino if he had a suggestion for a player that Liverpool could sell, to which he replied that Alexander-Arnold would be the most favorable candidate.
Alexander-Arnold is one of Liverpool’s players who has faced more scrutiny this season, as his defensive flaws have been exposed more than ever before.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher even questioned whether Alexander-Arnold would have the trust of another manager if he were to leave Liverpool.
Nonetheless, the full-back has a two-year contract with Liverpool, and historically he has stood out for his ability to provide assists, although even those figures have reduced this season.
Cascarino acknowledged that Liverpool has some exciting young players, but the competition for Champions League spots is much higher than before, with Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal emerging as strong competitors. Liverpool needs to earn more money to compete with them, he stated.
In his opinion, the club should be realistic and consider selling Alexander-Arnold, who could provide significant funds to address other issues in the squad.
