Vincenzo Italiano the manager of Bologna was impressed by the atmosphere at Anfield after his team lost to Liverpool 2-0 in the Champions League.
Mohamed Salah and Alexis Mac Allister scored the goals to cap off a hard-fought victory in Liverpool’s first home Champions League game since February 2023.
Bologna manager overpowered by Liverpool atmosphere
Bologna proved to be tough opponents despite the defeat. After placing fifth in Serie A Bologna made their Champions League debut for the first time since 1964.
Italiano accepted that playing at Anfield presented a challenge, but he also praised the powerful energy and early encouragement that spurred Liverpool especially when Mac Allister headed in Salah’s cross to score the game’s first goal in the eleventh minute.
He said in the post-match conference,
“Playing in a stadium like this makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up,
The opposition players, playing at home, are lifted up by this support around the stadium. I think in the first few minutes we found this difficult to come to terms with.”
He disclosed that his players initially had difficulty acclimating to the daunting environment but, they eventually settled into a groove as the game went on.
He maintained his optimism despite the loss pointing out instances of his teams strong midfield play that they could build upon.
However Liverpool’s new manager Arne Slot was pleased with the performance and emphasized the significance of winning challenging Champions League games.
He said,
“It was a good first experience because it was a win”
Slot marking his first Champions League game at Anfield hailed the clean sheet and strong individual performances as part of an overall positive night for the Reds.
