Bernardo Silva explains how Diogo Jota chose the ‘most difficult paths’

Diogo Jota’s passing has left a profound emptiness not only at Liverpool but across the football world.

Among those paying tribute was Manchester City star Bernardo Silva, who knew Jota closely from their years together with the Portugal national team.

Silva joined hundreds who gathered for Saturday’s funeral in Portugal to honor both Jota and his brother, André Silva, after their tragic accident.

He spoke openly about how Jota’s story was never about shortcuts or privileges but about grit and perseverance.

Silva reflects on the relentless spirit of a friend

“I must say a little about Jota, who was a great friend of all of us,” Silva said in an interview.

“His career, although not the most important, speaks for itself. He didn’t train at any of the big teams and took the most difficult paths.

“His passion, will and determination allowed him to succeed in life and have a brilliant career.”

Silva also shared memories that stretched beyond the pitch, recalling the warmth and humor Jota brought wherever he went.

“More important than that, as a person…the memories that remain…Jota will always be in our hearts,” he reflected.

“He will always be present at every breakfast, lunch, dinner, national team get-together, PlayStation or card game.”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, manager Arne Slot, and several club executives traveled to be part of the farewell.

Their presence underscored just how many lives Jota touched in his 28 years, a player admired for his talent, a person remembered for his heart.
