Bayern Munich legend hails new Liverpool signing as ‘best player’

Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge spoke about Liverpool’s latest signing, Florian Wirtz, in February.

Liverpool broke their club record to sign the German youngster after spending nearly £116m to bring him to Anfield this summer.

The Merseyside club officially announced the signing last Friday, and since then, many former players and coaches have praised the talented midfielder. Wirtz himself also revealed some insights behind his arrival in England.

Wirtz said: “Finally it’s done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it’s done and I am really happy.”

He further added: “I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.”

Several top clubs, including Manchester City and Bayern Munich, expressed interest in signing the 22-year-old player. However, Wirtz was thoroughly convinced by the plans presented by Liverpool manager Arne Slot. Wirtz stated: “The conversations were always really good. I remember the first time we spoke; he showed me some footage of how we want to play and how I could fit into the team.”

He also added: “He was just telling me that I’m a player he really wants to have in his team and can bring the team a step forward. I just could imagine it being good to be in the team and to make it better because I have to make my performances every week – but I’m here for this.”

As seen in these statements, Slot highly rates the German midfielder and initially wanted him in a red shirt. Wirtz’s performances for Germany and his former club Bayer Leverkusen have been impressive.

He has scored over 10 goals and provided over 10 assists in consecutive Bundesliga seasons, a feat achieved only by him and Mohamed Salah in Europe’s top five leagues.

What Bayern Munich legend Rummenigge said about Wirtz

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “For me, Florian Wirtz is the best player in Germany. And I make no secret of the fact that our clear goal must be to sign Wirtz. Everyone at FC Bayern agrees that he is exactly the player we want to sign.”

Although Bayern tried to bring him in, Wirtz decided to join Liverpool. Arne Slot played a major role in influencing the 22-year-old midfielder’s decision, helping the Premier League champions beat the competition to land their marquee signing.
