Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak has found himself at the center of transfer speculation, with Arsenal reportedly keen on securing his services.

However, footballing icons Jamie Carragher and Paul Scholes remain unconvinced about the viability of such a move. Instead they are touting Liverpool as a more fitting destination for the prolific Swedish forward.

With 19 goals in 28 appearances this season, Isak’s stock continues to rise. Further, he is one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers. Despite Arsenal’s apparent interest, Carragher questioned the credibility of the transfer speculation in an appearance on Sky Sports’ The Overlap. He suggested that Liverpool would be the more attractive option. He said,

“There’s a lot of talk about Isak.

There’s almost this feeling like Arsenal are going to sign him or Arsenal need to sign him…are you looking at that as an Arsenal fan and thinking that’s realistic that you can just go and buy Isak from Newcastle?

He’s got three or four years left on his contract.

There’s no talk about Liverpool getting him. I don’t understand where all this Arsenal talk [comes from].

Liverpool need one as well, and if Liverpool win the league, if he was to go, surely you’d pick the team who’d won the league.

Maybe it’s me seeing it on social media, but [joining Arsenal], that’s not realistic is it?”

Scholes backs Alexander Isak’s move to a bigger club

Siding with Carragher, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes echoed the sentiment. He also suggested that the 24-year-old should aim even higher than Arsenal.

“Everyone loves him.”

He responded when put to him that Arteta is a firm admirer,

“I don’t see a possibility of him going to Arsenal. I think he has to go to bigger and better.

I think you’re talking Real Madrids here, Liverpool need a centre-forward…I think [Arsenal will] be an option, but I think they’ll be down the list as an option.”

With ongoing speculation surrounding the futures of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Diogo Jota, Liverpool’s need for a new No. 9 is growing. While there have been whispers of interest from Anfield’s hierarchy. But the financial feasibility of a deal remains uncertain, especially with Isak’s valuation expected to exceed £100 million.

Nevertheless, Carragher and Scholes’ skepticism over Arsenal’s perceived confidence in landing Isak adds another layer to the debate. Should Liverpool secure the Premier League title, the pull of playing for the champions could make Merseyside the more attractive destination for the Swedish star.
